FNIRSI DSO-TC3 Review: The 3-in-1 Pocket Electronics Lab

Hands-on look at FNIRSI's best seller: the DSO-TC3 combines a 500 kHz oscilloscope, component tester and DDS signal generator in one rechargeable handheld.

Ask any electronics hobbyist community to name one FNIRSI product and the answer is usually the same: the DSO-TC3. It sits near the top of Amazon's oscilloscope best-seller lists for a simple reason — it rolls three genuinely useful bench tools into a device the size of a phone, at pocket-money cost.

What exactly is it?

The DSO-TC3 is a 3-in-1 handheld combining:
  • A digital storage oscilloscope — 500 kHz bandwidth, 10 MS/s sampling, one-key AUTO, and up to ±400 V input with the supplied high-voltage probe.
  • A component tester — automatically identifies and measures transistors (NPN/PNP), MOSFETs, diodes, resistors, inductors and capacitors including ESR, with pin-out detection.
  • A DDS signal generator — six waveforms (sine, square, pulse, triangle, ramp, DC) for injecting test signals.
On top of that it throws in continuity testing, temperature/humidity measurement and infrared remote decoding — all on a 2.4-inch colour TFT with a built-in rechargeable lithium battery.

The upgrade story: TC2 → TC3

The TC3 is the refined third generation of FNIRSI's most popular design. Over the DSO-TC2 it gains capacitor ESR measurement, the signal-generator output, roughly double the scope bandwidth and sampling rate, and a wider input-voltage and diode detection range — the improvements that turned a clever gadget into a genuinely dependable first instrument.

What it's like to use

The component tester is the star. Drop an unknown salvaged part into the ZIF socket, press test, and a second later the screen draws the part, its pin-out and its measured values — it's the fastest way there is to sort a drawer of mystery semiconductors. The scope side is honest entry-level: 500 kHz of bandwidth is ample for audio circuits, power-supply ripple, sensor outputs, PWM and serial-logic sanity checks, with single/normal/auto triggering and waveform save.
Know the limits: 500 kHz bandwidth is not for RF or fast MCU debugging — for that, step up to the DPOX180H or a tablet scope like the 1013D (see our review) from the carousel below. Reviewers also note the generator and scope work best used one at a time.

Who should buy it

Students, makers, and anyone doing component-level repair — audio gear, appliance boards, vintage electronics — will use the DSO-TC3 weekly. It's also the right "first scope" to learn triggering and measurement on before committing to a bench instrument. Seasoned engineers keep one in the field bag as the always-charged triage tool.

It supports in-circuit transistor testing, though readings are most reliable with the component isolated — surrounding parts can skew measurements, as with any component tester.

For PWM, analog sensor lines, slow serial and power-rail checks, yes. For fast digital buses (SPI at MHz rates) or crystal/RF work you'll want a higher-bandwidth scope like the FNIRSI DPOX180H.
