The Best Ubiquiti Home Network Setup in 2026 (Home User's Guide)

A plain-English guide to building a great UniFi home network — which gateway, how many access points, whether you need a switch, and how to add cameras and sensors later. Built for home users, not network engineers.

UniFi has a reputation for being "prosumer," but a home setup doesn't have to be complicated. This guide walks through a clean, upgradeable UniFi home network — in normal language — and tells you exactly what to buy for your situation.

Step 1: Pick your brain (the gateway)

The gateway is the heart of the network — it's the router, firewall and UniFi controller in one. For most homes:

  • UniFi Express 7 (UX7) — all-in-one router + WiFi 7 AP for smaller homes/apartments
  • Cloud Gateway Ultra (UCG-Ultra) — tiny, silent gateway; add your own APs
  • Dream Router 7 (UDR7) — gateway + WiFi + storage in one tidy unit

Step 2: Wi-Fi coverage

One access point rarely covers a whole house well. As a rule of thumb, plan one WiFi 7 AP per ~140 m² and per floor. The U7 Pro is the default pick; the U7 Lite suits smaller spaces and budgets.

Step 3: Do you need a switch?

If you have more wired devices than ports on your gateway — or you want to power access points and cameras over a single cable (PoE) — add a switch. A small PoE switch is the usual answer for homes.

Step 4: Add cameras and sensors later

The beauty of UniFi is that it grows with you. Add Protect cameras for security, UniFi smart sensors for motion/temperature/leak detection, and a UniFi 5G Backup ($99) so the internet stays up during NBN outages — all managed from the same app.

Not anymore. An all-in-one like the UX7 or Dream Router 7 is about as simple as a good consumer router, but you get proper coverage, control and room to grow.

No — the UniFi app handles setup and day-to-day management. And if you'd rather not, we can supply it pre-configured.

A UniFi Express 7 (UX7) on its own is a complete router + WiFi 7 AP for an apartment or small home. Add APs and a switch only when you need them.

Want a home network designed and supplied ready to go? We do that.
